How to choose the right battery power source
Sizing starts from what you are going to run and for how long. Add up the power of the appliances used at the same time and make sure the continuous output covers it.
- Simultaneous power demand in watts, not just the peak output
- Running time: the capacity in watt-hours (Wh) decides how long it lasts
- The number of 230 V outlets you need
- Operating environment: splash-protected outlets are an advantage outdoors
- Portability: 15.6 kg or 25 kg
If the power demand goes above 2400 watts, or if equipment runs for a full working day, a combustion engine is often the better answer – for example a 3000 rpm generator. The whole range is on the generators and battery power sources page.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a battery power source last?
The running time comes from the capacity and the load. A 2160 watt-hour battery, for example, supplies a 500 watt load for roughly four hours. The capacity of the smaller model is 1152 watt-hours.
Can the unit be used indoors?
Yes. A battery power source produces no exhaust gases and no noise, so it suits indoor and enclosed spaces where a combustion engine generator cannot be used.
Can it be charged and used at the same time?
Yes. Both models support charging and use at the same time, so work does not stop while the unit charges.
Is it suitable for sensitive measuring instruments?
Yes. The output is a pure sine wave, so measuring instruments, computers and modern chargers can be connected safely.
How quickly does the battery charge?
The STI-E1200 charges fully in about two hours and the STI-E2400 in about three. Both can be charged from mains power, from a vehicle or with solar panels.
