Spine-DN40 water meter – remote-read ultrasonic water meter for precise consumption monitoring

Spine-DN40 water meter is a remote-read water meter based on ultrasonic technology, which measures water consumption continuously and automatically transmits the readings to the Spine service via a built-in NB-IoT connection. No separate communication device is needed, which simplifies installation and reduces system complexity. The meter’s continuous rated flow is 16 m³/h and its overload flow is 25 m³/h.

The DN40 model is particularly suited to construction sites, industrial facilities, properties and other sites where water consumption needs to be monitored remotely and any leaks or other deviations need to be responded to quickly.

Automatic water shut-off increases site safety

By combining the keskus, a separate Spine control unit and a motorized shut-off valve, the site’s water supply can be shut off automatically — for example after the working day ends, at night, on weekends, or during longer site shutdowns. The valve can be controlled on a schedule, so the water supply is cut off when no one is on site.

Automatic water shut-off helps reduce the risk of water damage, especially outside working hours. The combination of meter and valve can also be used to detect leaks or water loss: if consumption shows a deviation after the valve is reopened, water may have been lost from the pipework while it was shut.

Accurate and reliable ultrasonic technology

The keskus uses ultrasonic technology and has no moving parts. The meter’s accuracy class is R400, and its continuous rated flow (Q3) is 16 m³/h. The meter can be installed horizontally, vertically or at an angle, and ultrasonic measurement doesn’t require straight pipe sections before or after the meter.

Hour-by-hour consumption tracking in the Spine service

The meter monitors water consumption continuously. Normal measurement data is sent to the Spine service once a day, and the transmission includes an hour-by-hour consumption history. Water consumption can therefore be reviewed at hourly resolution, as well as by day, week, month and project.

Once the price of water is set up in Spine, the estimated water cost can also be shown alongside consumption. The service can also track things like water temperature, battery and network connection status, and meter alarms.

Critical alarms reach Spine quickly

Leak, pipe-burst, freeze and tamper alarms are sent to Spine as separate alarm messages as soon as the meter’s alarm condition is met. Other monitored conditions include backflow, empty pipe, low battery and overflow, whose data is included with the normal measurement message.

On the DN40 model, the factory setting for the leak alarm corresponds to a flow of 40 l/h, when the flow continues uninterrupted for 24 hours. A pipe-burst alarm is triggered when the flow exceeds 3200 l/h continuously for 60 minutes. A freeze alarm is triggered when the water temperature stays below +2 °C for five minutes.

Spine-DN40 water meter on the worksite

Spine is a remote monitoring system. Measurement data is sent to the cloud service where it can be viewed on any device – nobody needs to travel to the site to read a meter.

Consumption readings are transferred once a day together with hourly consumption history. Critical alarms, however, are sent immediately, so a leak does not wait for the next transfer.

The same cloud service gathers every Spine unit on the site into one view, however many measuring points there are.

Where Spine-DN40 water meter is used

Typical sites are construction projects, renovations, industrial maintenance and event power. What they share is that the electrical supply is temporary and the conditions are demanding.

Temporary does not mean lighter requirements. Site equipment is exposed to dust, moisture, moving and mechanical stress in a way that fixed installations never are.

Check the load distribution between phases during use. Uneven distribution overloads one phase while the others run half empty, and the usual symptom is a fuse that keeps tripping.

How to choose the right model

The equipment is chosen by rated current and outputs. Start by calculating the simultaneous load and the output types needed, and choose the model on that basis.

Other models of the same type are Spine-DN25 water meter, Spine-DN32 water meter, Spine Valve DN25.

Practical notes for use

Winter brings requirements of its own. Condensation forms when cold equipment is brought into the warm, and moisture inside the enclosure is a common reason for an RCD tripping with no visible cause.

Mark the equipment with the site details and keep a record of what is fed from where. On a site with several contractors that saves time at every fault-finding.

RCD protection is mandatory for socket outputs on a site. Its operation is tested with the test button at commissioning and at regular intervals afterwards.

Spine-DN40 water meter – installation and maintenance

Installation and connection work is carried out by a qualified electrician. The equipment must be made dead before connection work, and the absence of voltage verified by measurement.

Place the equipment on level ground and so that it can be reached freely even when the site fills up with material. Material stacked in front blocks both use and emergency isolation.

Test the RCD with its test button at commissioning and at regular intervals afterwards. The test takes a second and is still almost always forgotten.

Check the joints and fixings regularly during use. A joint that heats up is a sign of a fault and should be corrected before the fault spreads.

Safety and inspections

Site electrical installations are subject to the same requirements as fixed installations, and some of them are stricter. The equipment has to withstand moving, dust, moisture and mechanical stress for the whole project.

The installation is inspected at commissioning and regularly during use: enclosure, joints, the operation of the protective devices and the fact that live parts cannot be reached.

Damaged equipment is not repaired improvised on site. A cracked enclosure, a burnt terminal or a damaged socket is replaced – on a site a temporary repair almost always becomes permanent.

Document the configuration and any changes made. Up-to-date information on outputs and protection speeds up fault-finding and the next inspection.

Delivery and sizing help

We deliver the equipment together with the cables and the rest of the site power supply in one delivery, so the set is complete when it arrives on site.

Describe the whole site in your request for quotation: supply power, the outputs needed and the estimated length of the project. We size the set on that basis.

Use the product number 501350002 when ordering and when asking about spare parts. It identifies this exact model, which matters when the same series comes in several sizes.

We also help with the sizing. If you are unsure about the size or the number of outputs, ask us – equipment sized wrong costs more than equipment chosen right the first time.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Spine-DN40 water meter MID-approved?

Yes. The meter meets the requirements of the EU Measuring Instruments Directive (MID 2014/32/EU), so the measurement can be used as the basis for billing.

Does the meter need a separate communication device?

No. The meter has a built-in NB-IoT connection that sends measurement data directly to the Spine service without a separate transmitter.

Can the Spine-DN40 water meter shut off the water automatically?

Yes, when the meter is combined with a Spine control unit and a motorized shut-off valve. The water supply can then be cut off on a schedule, for example at night and on weekends.

How quickly does a leak alarm arrive?

A leak alarm is triggered when the flow exceeds the meter’s alarm threshold (40 l/h) continuously for 24 hours, and the alarm is sent to the Spine service as soon as the condition is met.

What is the product’s part number?

The part number is 501350002. You can use it for orders and quote requests.
