SPINE · WATER

Water consumption made visible, leaks caught before the bill.

Spine water meters measure and monitor consumption continuously by ultrasound and send the data automatically to the Spine service. Consumption is seen hour by hour, and a pipe burst, a leak or a freeze risk each triggers its own alarm message as soon as the meter’s alarm condition is met. Spine water keeps consumption visible for the whole project.

The situation without Spine

A water leak shows up on the bill first, not in the pipe

A temporary pipe run can leak quietly for weeks. The most common way to notice it is the water utility’s bill, by which point the consumption is already paid for.

Leaks

A small leak in a continuous flow doesn’t stand out visually at all.

Nighttime

Night-time consumption shouldn’t be zero, but no one tracks it in real time.

Billing

Consumption ends up as a single total figure, even though it should be split by area.

Frost

The freeze risk is often noticed only after a pipe has already burst.

When this matters

Three situations where water costs more than it should

A site’s water connection is rarely anyone’s responsibility until the bill arrives. Spine makes consumption visible for the whole project.

A leak over the weekend

A broken fitting leaks from Friday to Monday. A pipe burst triggers an alarm within an hour and a slower leak within a day – not weeks later on the water bill.

Freeze risk in winter

The meter warns when the water temperature stays below 2 °C for five minutes. With a motorised valve and a Spine control unit added to the line, the water is shut off outside working hours on a schedule.

Allocating consumption

When a site has several contractors or phases, hour-by-hour consumption data shows where the water is actually going.

How it works

Ultrasonic measurement with no moving parts

The Spine system is integrated directly inside the meter, so no separate communication devices are needed.

  • Remote reading without a local network An NB-IoT connection sends measurement data automatically to the Spine cloud. No network infrastructure or separate data logger needs to be built on site.
  • Accurate even at low flow rates Accuracy class R400 means that the lower end of the measuring range, Q1, is 1/400 of the nominal flow Q3 – 25 l/h on the DN25 and DN32 meters and 40 l/h on the DN40. Even a slow leak shows up in the data.
  • Installs in any position No straight pipe sections required. Horizontal, vertical or at an angle all work, and air, sand or impurities don’t interfere with the measurement.
  • Automatic water shut-off with add-on devices The meter itself does not shut off the water. Combined with a Spine control unit and a motorized shut-off valve, the water can be cut off on a schedule outside working hours.
  • Maintenance-free for the whole project No moving parts, a composite body, IP68 protection rating and a battery life of up to 13 years.

Alarms

What Spine alerts you to automatically

A leak, a pipe burst, freezing and tampering are each sent as a separate alarm message as soon as the meter’s alarm condition is met. Other status data arrives with the next daily transmission. The alarm limits are set at the factory according to the meter’s nominal flow Q3.

Leak alarmFlow above 0.25 % of Q3 continuously for 24 h
Pipe burstFlow above 20 % of Q3 continuously for 60 min
Low temperatureWater temperature below 2 °C for five minutes
TamperingMeter opened or interfered with
BackflowFlow in the wrong direction (with the daily message)
Empty pipeWater supply lost or cut (with the daily message)

Frequently asked questions

Answers about water meters

Is water consumption visible in real time?

No. The meter measures and monitors consumption continuously, but the normal measurement data is sent once a day and it contains the hourly consumption history. Consumption is therefore seen hour by hour. The critical alarms – leak, pipe burst, freezing and tampering – are the exception: they are sent as their own message immediately.

Is the meter approved for billing measurement?

The meter is MID-approved and meets the requirements of the MID 2014/32/EU, EN ISO 4064 and OIML R49 standards; the same meter family is also used by water utilities for their own metering. A site’s Spine meter is, however, intended for monitoring your own consumption and for sub-metering: it does not automatically replace the water utility’s billing meter, because practices on meter approval, ownership and sealing vary by country and by utility. Read more about the EU Measuring Instruments Directive (MID).

Does the meter need a separate data transmission device?

No. The Spine system is built into the meter and uses an NB-IoT connection, so no local network infrastructure is required.

When does the meter start sending data?

Once the first 10 litres of water have passed through the meter. Installing it in the pipework does not yet start the data transmission. The meter is linked to a project by scanning its QR code or by entering its serial number.

Does the water meter shut off the water itself if it detects a leak?

No. The meter sends a leak alarm automatically, but it does not shut off the water. Automatic shut-off requires a motorised valve installed in the line and a separate Spine control unit. These are ordered alongside the meter.

Can the water be shut off automatically outside working hours?

Yes, once a motorised valve and a Spine control unit have been installed. The control is schedule-based: the water is shut off for nights and weekends, for example, and opened again before the working day starts. A leak alarm does not shut the valve by itself. If consumption shows a deviation right after the valve is opened, water may have escaped from the pipework while it was closed – this is not a pressure test, however, since the meter does not measure pressure.

How is the leak alarm threshold set?

The limit is set at the factory from the meter’s nominal flow Q3: the leak alarm is 0.25 % of Q3, i.e. 25 l/h on the DN25 and DN32 meters and 40 l/h on the DN40. The alarm is triggered when the flow stays above the limit continuously for 24 hours. The alarm recipients are chosen in the Spine app.

How long does the battery last?

Battery life is up to 13 years. Spine gives proactive notice as the charge level drops, so the meter never quietly goes offline.

Does installation require straight pipe sections?

No. The meter can be installed in any position, and air, sand or other impurities do not disturb the ultrasonic measurement. Measurement is bidirectional.

Does the DN size match the pipe size?

No. A water meter’s DN size is not the same thing as the outside diameter of the pipe: a DN25 meter typically suits a 32 mm PE water pipe, DN32 around 40 mm and DN40 around 50 mm. The final size is chosen according to the flow required, the pipework and the fittings. Nor does the DN size tell you the Q3 value or the alarm limits.
