Aurora Frost ground thawing trailer is the ground thawing unit of the Aurora Block modular climate control system. Its heat production is based on the Aurora 64 condensing oil boiler, which delivers 64 kilowatts of thermal energy into the thawing hoses. Who is the Aurora Frost ground thawing trailer for?

The trailer is meant for winter construction: opening excavations, foundation work and infrastructure projects where frost would otherwise stop the job.

It also suits maintenance and repair work where the ground has to be thawed quickly and predictably. The thawing area is 0–400 square metres depending on site conditions.

The trailer is ready to operate on arrival at site, so no separate installation or site-specific design work is needed.

600 metres of hose on motorised reels

The trailer carries 600 metres of water-circulating thawing hose on integrated reels. The hoses are laid out across the work area and collected back onto motor-operated reels.

Motorisation means that deploying and collecting 600 metres of hose is a one-person job. With hand-pulled equipment the same work would need several people and considerably more time.

Warm water circulates in the hoses and thaws the frost from below upwards, so thawing progresses evenly across the whole area.

Aurora Frost ground thawing trailer and heat production

Heat is produced by the integrated Aurora 64 condensing oil boiler, which runs on diesel and HVO biodiesel. Heating power is 64 kW and efficiency 90–98 %.

The flow temperature is up to 90 °C. That high flow temperature is exactly what makes thawing fast – a heat pump typically reaches only +60 °C.

The same boiler also works in the Aurora Block system as a separate backup heating unit.

Aurora Frost ground thawing trailer and Spine remote control

The trailer is controlled and adjusted through the Spine platform. You see the flow temperature, fuel level and device status in real time, and deviations raise an alarm. A five-year Spine licence is included in the delivery.

Aurora Frost ground thawing trailer on site

The trailer is towed to the site, the hoses are laid out over the area to be thawed and covered with insulating blankets. An ordinary 230 volt connection is enough for the electrical supply.

Thawing speed depends on frost depth, soil type and covering. The thawing area is 0–400 square metres, and thawing progresses faster over a smaller area.

Once the area has thawed, the hoses are wound back onto the motorised reels and the trailer moves to the next site.

Fuel and emissions

The trailer runs on diesel and HVO biodiesel. HVO cuts emissions significantly with no modifications to the equipment.

Ground thawing is short-term, targeted work, so fuel is consumed only while thawing. Finland’s national energy agency Motiva publishes background on heating methods and energy efficiency.

Condensing technology raises the efficiency to 90–98 %, so considerably more is drawn from the fuel than with an ordinary boiler.
